This book will give you a glimpse of the joy and fulfillment that comes through a deep relationship with God. It's a relationship that is made possible by God primarily through two sacraments. One is the Eucharist where Jesus is truly present in His body and blood, and the other is the sacrament of reconciliation where Jesus offers us complete forgiveness and a warm welcome back into God's love whenever we have sinned against Him. The potency of these sacraments which can totally transform, heal, and renew us are obtained only through the hands of the validly ordained priest. As you read this book you will experience the greath lengths that God has taken to bring each of us into a close and deep communion with Himself. You will see and experience through the living witness of others the gentle and loving ways that God reaches out to us through the sacraments of the Church, ministered to us by His priests. [less]

The book is a mystery of its own -- and is definitely not for Christians only." --Rabbi Joshua Chasan"Abandonment to Divine Providence is a classic perhaps more necessary now than ever before. It's a little book that rightly rejects the spirituality of fear and trembling (and the modern preoccupation with dreary self-absorption) in favor of an abiding trust in God's active benevolence. This is a work one reads again and again, always with gratitude and astonishment." --Donald Spoto, Author of Blue Angel and The Dark Side of Genius [less]

According to John is a reader's guide to the most important ideas and themes in the Gospel of John. Rather than approaching its subject chapter by chapter, it asks readers to read the Gospel all the way through, and then takes them through the secret messages, codes and themes represented by the characters in the Gospel, the vocabulary of "word," "spirit," church connections such as sacramental allusions, life after death, hope, and community life in the vision of the gospel. The author, writing clearly and approachably, also devotes attention to the mystery of the identity of the Beloved Disciple and the implications of the Gospel on today's life. Each chapter ends with questions for discussion or reflection. A most useful and unique element is the addition of a thematic index to the Gospel of John that is ideal for preachers. Students, whether college level or in Bible study/adult education classes, will gain a good sense of who Jesus is in this gospel, and then also appreciate the many persons who surrounded him. They will be able to identify with what they read as well as develop a finer understanding of what contemporary faith life is all about. [less]

While the term acedia may be unfamiliar, the vice, usually translated as sloth, is all too common. Sloth is not mere laziness, however, but a disgust with reality, a loathing of our call to be friends with God, and a spiteful hatred of place and life itself. As described by Josef Pieper, the slothful person does not "want to be as God wants him to be, and that ultimately means he does not wish to be what he really, fundamentally is." At the time of his arrest, he was the Rector of St. Georg Church in Munich, and had a reputation for being a gripping, dynamic preacher, and one who was an outspoken critic of the Nazi regime. He was an important figure in the Resistance movement against Nazism. Accused of conspiring against the Nazi government, he was arrested in 1944, tortured, imprisoned, and executed on Feb 2, 1945. While in prison, Fr. Delp was able to write a few meditations found in this book, which also includes his powerful reflections from prison during the Advent season about the profound spiritual meaning and lessons of Advent, as well as his sermons he gave on the season of Advent at his parish in Munich. These meditations were smuggled out of Berlin and read by friends and parishioners of St. Georg in Munich. His approach to Advent, the season that prepares us for Christmas, is what Fr. Delp called an "Advent of the heart." More than just preparing us for Christmas, it is a spiritual program, a way of life. He proclaimed that our personal, social and historical circumstances, even suffering, offer us entry into the true Advent, our personal journey toward a meeting and dialogue with God. Indeed, his own life, and great sufferings, illustrated the true Advent he preached and wrote about. From his very prison cell he presented a timeless spiritual message, and in an extreme situation, his deep faith gave him the courage to draw closer to God, and to witness to the truth even at the cost of his own life. These meditations will challenge and inspire all Christians to embark upon that same spiritual journey toward union with God, a journey that will transform our lives [less]

"Like most people who are lovers of God's word, for a long time, I was very uncomfortable with the Book of Revelation…. But I found that there was a way out of the confusion, a way to hear what God was saying, a means of interpreting the book in the way that God intended…" —from the Introduction In this engaging and responsible volume, Scripture scholar Stephen Doyle uses a three-pronged approach to deciphering the complicated and often-misunderstood Book of Revelation—one that is accessible to a new Bible reader, yet useful to the serious student. Following the directives of the Second Vatican Council's Constitution on Divine Revelation, he helps the reader to: examine the text in light of its original language, understand what the human author meant to communicate, and determine the literary form used and its influence on the meaning of the text. Each chapter begins with a passage of the Book of Revelation, followed by an explanation that searches for the main theme in that passage, and concludes with a reflection that casts light on the meaning of the text for today. A thorough bibliography provides resources for further study. [less]

Ardin Newsletter In one series, the original writings of the universally acknowledged teachers of the Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Jewish, Islamic and Native American traditions have been critically selected, translated and introduced by internationally recognized scholars and spiritual leaders. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO-SELECTED WRITINGS translated and introduced by Mary T. Clark preface by Goulven Madec "You have made us to be toward you, and our heart is restless until it rests in you" Augustine of Hippo (354-430) Augustine of Hippo (354-430), bishop, philosopher, and Doctor of the Church whose thought molded the Western theological tradition, is clearly one of the most influential figures in the history of the Church. At the heart of his brilliant philosophical and theological speculation is his spirituality-a spirituality founded on the reality of the soul's experience of the Trinity in the depths of its interiority. This book is a collection of his writings, which in every sense must be considered true classics of spirituality in the West. Included are excerpts from Confessions, On the Trinity, The City of God, and Homilies on the Psalms along with the complete texts of the Rule of St. Augustine, On Seeing God, and On the Presence of God. In speaking of Augustine's relevance for our time, Paul VI said: "If St. Augustine were alive today, he would speak as he spoke a thousand and more years ago. Why? Because he really personifies a humanity that believes, that loves Christ and our beloved God." [less]

Catechists and parents will find this Catechism an invaluable teaching tool as they prepare children and catechumens to receive the Sacraments and lead authentic Catholic lives. Students will find this an uncomplicated and friendly guide to authentic Catholicism. The 33 lessons contained in Baltimore Catechism No. 1 present the basics of the Catholic Faith in a manner suitable for First Communicants through fifth graders. The Beauty of the Infinite is a splendid extended essay in "theological aesthetics." David Bentley Hart here meditates on the power of a Christian understanding of beauty and sublimity to rise above the violence -- both philosophical and literal -- characteristic of the postmodern world. The book begins by tracing the shifting use and nature of metaphysics in the thought of Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Lyotard, Derrida, Deleuze, Nancy, Levinas, and others. Hart pays special attention to Nietzsche's famous narrative of the "will to power" -- a narrative largely adopted by the world today -- and he offers an engaging revision (though not rejection) of the genealogy of nihilism, thereby highlighting the significant "interruption" that Christian thought introduced into the history of metaphysics. This discussion sets the stage for a retrieval of the classic Christian account of beauty and sublimity, and of the relation of both to the question of being. Written in the form of a dogmatica minora, this main section of the book offers a pointed reading of the Christian story in four moments, or parts: Trinity, creation, salvation, and eschaton. Through a combination of narrative and argument throughout, Hart ends up demonstrating the power of Christian metaphysics not only to withstand the critiques of modern and postmodern thought but also to move well beyond them.Strikingly original and deeply rewarding, The Beauty of the Infinite is both a constructively critical account of the history of metaphysics and a compelling contribution to it. Ronald Knox was one of the most influential British convert-writers of the 20th century. Of his many works, The Belief of Catholics is his best-known book and his premiere piece of apologetics. While it deals extensively with Protestantism, its target is more the unchurched or lightly-church modern who, if he gives any thought at all to Catholicism, thinks it mildly foreign. As Knox knew, it is not the most difficult part of modern apologetics to convince the devoted Protestant that he has much [...]

While it deals extensively with Protestantism, its target is more the unchurched or lightly-church modern who, if he gives any thought at all to Catholicism, thinks it mildly foreign. As Knox knew, it is not the most difficult part of modern apologetics to convince the devoted Protestant that he has much of Christian truth but now needs to move on to the rest, which is found only in the Catholic Church. The most difficult part is convincing the nominal Protestant (or nominal Catholic), the vaguely religious person, or the person without any religious inclinations that God really does exist, that His existence matters, and that only knowledge of Him and obedience to Him can lead to answers to the questions that haunt everyone. This is a different kind of saint's biography - one that reads almost like a novel. In these pages Bernadette lives again. We follow her from birth to death, hearing her speak, watching her interact, experiencing with her the life-changing impact of the eighteen apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes. But this is not a novel. Everything recounted here has been strictly authenticated by the author, renowned Marian scholar Father Rene Laurentin. Father Laurentin has spent twenty years, in collaboration with several successive teams of experts, scientifically establishing the history of Lourdes and of Bernadette Soubirous. The fascinating result reveals the hidden face of Saint Bernadette. The Holy Spirit led Bernadette down a path of Gospel holiness and simplicity - a path of abandonment to the merciful love of God. She remains for us a humble and radiant herald of our Lord and our Lady, echoing across the centuries a message of challenge and of hope: change your heart; begin to fully live the Gospel of Jesus. Father Rene Laurentin, one of the foremost Marian theologians of our time, holds a licentiate in philosophy, as well as doctoral degrees in literature, history and theology. He has taught in universities across France, Italy and the United States. Father Laurentin's research on the apparitions at Lourdes, begun in 1952, has been compiled in no less than thirty volumes. His study culminated in the publication of Bernadette vous parle, presented here in its entirety in a first-time English edition. [less]
